CONTENT CREATOR or VIDEOGRAPHY
Content creator v Videography
This must be one of the most often asked question I see on social media.
What is the difference? Why would I want a video when I can get a content creator for less.
“A content creator is cheaper and so I will just have that instead”
The answer is both simple, but also more complex when you dive into it.
The quick answer would be, how would you like to watch your wedding day back in years to come? On a small screen mobile or on a large screen watching with family.
Watching your day back , should be a family event, we already spend too long peering at our phones!
Social media trends, come and go. TIKTOKS look good and are fun, however they may look dated in years to come. If all you have is lots of short clips on a phone, once the initial buzz has worn off, regret will no doubt follow.
Content is definitely a fun addition.
However, please do not think a content creator with a phone can replace a photographer! there is so much miss selling and false promises on line.
Im a videographer, and I cannot replace your photographer. Pleased dont think a content creator can replace a photographer.
The misconceptions about Video
It’s too staged
Video is what YOU WANT it to be, it can be discreet or more staged, just like photography.
You can have 2 hr films, or short 6 min films. You can have documentary films or cinematic films! whatever you want from your film.
It’s what you want it to be, there are so many styles of films.
Content creators film parts of the day your video and photographer miss
This actually annoys me, I’ve yet to see any content creator capture ANYTHIING a video or photographer doesn’t include in the film, except a TIKTOK video.
room set up, bridal prep, groom prep, guest reactions, drone footage, first look with whom ever is walking you down the isle, full ceremony, with pro audio, bridal film shoot, guest footage, reception, cake cutting, speeches, dances, everything. That’s what a video provides, and delivered in several formats to watch on a TV and on a phone!
Video provides more footage, or it should!
Your wedding day is often 12 hrs long, your ceremony at least half an hour, with speeches about the same. So that’s an hour long film. unless you know, you never want to watch it again.
You think you will never watch a 2-hour film of your wedding.
Your wedding day is a once in a lifetime event, where all your family and important people in your life get together.
As we get older, having family captured on film becomes more important.
Often, we don’t realise this until it’s too late.
A wedding video is about capturing your family on film, it’s an investment in your family, that at some point, will become priceless. Perhaps not to you, but it will to future generations.
You also get a short film, that is ideal for watching on social media, included.
It covers all the bases
The only thing it doesn’t provide is the TIKTOK trending reels.
So what is content?
Content is usually filmed using a mobile phone, although high end content should be filmed using similar equipment to your videographer.!
It is short clips, normally no more than 30s long, delivered to you the next day.
It looks good on a phone and is usually filmed in the portrait mode, (you don’t need to rotate the phone)
There are literally thousand of people advertising content as you only need a phone.
It’s quick to deliver as the software on the phone makes editing quick and easy. TikTok has its own built-in software.
It provides instant gratification
Remember though, you are paying someone to film clips of your wedding on a phone!
You can actually have people at your wedding do the same thing.
Pros and cons of video v content creation
Video
Provides much more footage and looks good on a large screen TV and a phone.
Can provide 2 hr films and short social media highlight films for your phone
The audio is far superior as it is normally captured separately and edited with the film
A video doesn’t miss parts of your day.
You may have to wait for the film due to the editing involved
Great to watch with friends and family on a TV
Content
Delivered the next day
Great fun TIKTOK videos
looks good on a mobile phone but poor on a TV
its cheaper
Gives you the dopamine hit the next morning
TIKTOKS may not be so appealing in years to come.
Misconceptions
It’s an iPhone 17 PRO max! it’s been used in Hollywood films!
Well yes, they have! However, when I see this advertised, I find it very disingenuous
iPhone’s used in the film world are specially rigged with expensive lenses, the footage is recorded externally and sent to specialist colour graders and they have big budgets for big lighting! Everything a wedding isn’t
The footage looks great on my phone!
Yes, it looks great, that’s how clever phones are. However, your phone screen is small
and it’s not 4K resolution (unless you have a Sony Experia)
The reason is the human eye cannot tell the difference between the old HD resolution and 4K on such a small screen.
TIKTOK and Instagram only support HD because of this!
So even if you record 4k footage, once you upload it to TIKTOK, it’s changed to HD before you see it!
Content creators capture the parts of the day we miss!
No, that’s simply not true.
In fact, we capture more of your day.
And now for the honest truth
Whilst content has its place, and I can see the appeal of TIKTOKS etc
YOU CAN DO CONTENT YOURSELF
And that’s the difference between content and video
I’ve seen so many wedding parties doing their own TIKTOKS and Bridesmaids filming clips of the day, suppliers filming clips for their own social media, all the social content you could ever want, and for free!
So, whilst it’s a great addition to a wedding., it cannot replace video.
There are a few unscrupulous content creators offering photos and videos, including full ceremony and speeches
This is so unfair. You are paying for someone to place a mobile phone on a stand and leave it to record the speeches. Do it yourself if you must, but remember your guest are also doing the same thing and for free! Just remember, I bet you never watch it back! The sound will be terrible, if you can hear it at all.
Your photographer has spent years learning how to pose couples, how to use light.they are an integral part of your day.
Just because creators have followed a photographer or videographer at a wedding, copying the footage with their phones, they suddenly think they don’t need a photographer.
Please don’t choose content over photography! I will always recommend a photographer.
Your photographs will be poor quality from a content creator.
